ABSTRACT

Based on population statistics, India ranks second globally. The population, currently at 1.21 billion, is expected to grow at a pace of 1.41% every year. When the country's age distribution is considered, however, it becomes clear that India has a relatively young population. India has a population that is composed of 30% people under the age of 15 and 65% people in the 15–64 age range. India has a 74.04% literacy rate when accounting for the 2011 census. Upon gaining independence, barely 14% of Indians were literate. From then on, it has climbed, though at various rates in each state. For example, the rates in Kerala and Mizoram are far higher than the national average, while the rate in Bihar is a miserable 63.8%.This essay focuses on the principles of literacy, the importance of literacy, the estimated state-by-state literacy rates in India in 2022, the reasons behind the high prevalence of illiteracy in India, and the steps taken by the government to expedite the nation's educational plans.
